firstly i just gotta tell ya this hilarious story - one night sept 1985 after the kinks played at the Pier 84 concert (thats NYC)- two kids were chasing a limo up the street - i yelled "Is that one of the Kinks?" No Answer the car pulled over by that time I caught up - lo and behold it was Dave "Death of a Clown Davies" we chatted and he signed mt Tour program.........................caught him and Ray in 1993. Ok I saw the Kinks 17 X plus 2 Ray solo dates. I rread "kink" 16 years after release (HEY record companies flooded the market with compil. with bonus tracks then there are books, dvds etc etc my review is as follows.... Its great to read a kinks book from one of the members where we read first time accounts, some information is just way too much information! I just had to shake my head when Dave insults his brother who either stold or just ignored his idea. Unbelievable (Hence the separate limos!) I once had tickets for a Garden concert in 1983 - only to have it (the whole tour cancelled) this was a Sept concert - I actually saw them Dec 31 1983 (their 20th anniversary concert although no one bothered to mention/notice that fact!) The book is well written we learn alot about Dave's solo side (face it George Harrison, John Entwistle and Bill Wyman are very talented musicians but they including DD are overshadowed by the Main songwriters or wanna be leaders of the group) There are things left out of this book for instance -wheres reference toJimmy Page session man on debut album and the life time dispute about "who played the solo on You Really Got me"????) Yes Dave we know it was you and you are the rocker of the group. I recomend this book - Kink expert Doug Hinman did the discography with (name escapes me) so that helps fans locate diiscs and cds, however after 1997 DD released some more stuff. And i am sorry this is all i got to say..........

Kink An Autobiography Dave Davies 9780786882694 Books Reviews
Dave's story from his family home life, through early success, up until the later part of the Kinks. Dave holds nothing back in telling the tale about his journey towards a more productive, and spiritual life.
both brothers are nuts and thats why I enjoyed this book
i LOVE the book. it has the ring of TRUTH about it, which is kind of rare in autobiographies. this comes across as an honest accounting of his fascinating life. i could have read more and more. would have liked to learn more about his parents and siblings and girlfriends and kids...hope he writes another book soon. i have become a FAN.
KINK is subtitled The Outrageous Story of My Wild Years as the Founder and Lead Guitarist of the Kinks. Dave Davies is the younger brother who spent most of his life living in the shadow of Ray Davies, the lead singer of the Kinks and writer of most of their songs. Dave started playing in a band when he was 15 and quickly became addicted to their success and the R&R lifestyle of the 60's. While there is plenty of sex, drugs and rock and roll, this memoir has much added depth. There is a poignant "there but for fortune" scene about half-way through the book where Dave meets Keith Moon in a bar for the last time before Moon dies.
What saved Dave from the fatal excesses of his peers was a strong sense of family, that even extended to his troubled relationship with Ray. They are not the Everley Brothers. Dave knows he is being abused, but he also knows that Ray loves him as much as he loves Ray. He doesn't give up on Ray even when their mom and Ray's shrink tell him that Ray will destroy him.
The other saving grace for this hard-drinking rocker is Spiritualism, a faith that grows stronger as Dave ages and sees him through his bad times. It is surprising and very touching to find such a strong belief in UFOs, psychic energy, yoga, and universal love in a person who has led such a excessive life. Yet his deep compassion, love, and faith shine through his friendships with band members, his close relationships with the women in his life, and his love of his children.
One is left with the picture of a simple working-class man who rises to a whole new level of consciousness and spirit through the medium of music. This is required reading for any Kinks fan, but is also a delightful tale of the power of hope and love that will inspire many others.
Dave's biography, unlike Ray's, is a typical rock star bio itemizing the drugs and women he did at each tour stop. Like Ray, he can tell you in great detail how he was feeling, but seems oblivious as to how he affected the people around him. Although he complains about Ray's condescending attitude towards himself, he turns around does the same to the other Kinks members. However, Dave's bio does contain more facts than Ray's.
This book is OK but it reinforces my belief that there is such a thing as being too familiar with an artist. I LOVE the Kinks and they deserve to be on the same level as the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. Perhaps knowing everything Dave Davies was thinking at all times is not totally necessary. Well, it isn't for me.
after a friend of mines sister gave me her copy of lola vs. the money go round I became a die hard kinks fan seeing them three times in the l.a area during the 70s.I really always liked daves solo work and have his dvd kronikles.so I bought this book. I always thought ray and dave may be a little quay but that's their business and it had nothing to do with the music. I really didn't need him to explain his gay antics in such depth to that extent.could have been a lot shorter and still make his point.I really liked how he explained his family and the let downs and ups of family and friends.Turns out their basically just the ordinary people and typical brothers. Its really a bummer that they wont make another album and a tour.really miss their music although the solo music is good they should pull their heads out and make another album!!!
