I would say that this novel's appeal lies outside of the limited genre tag "medical thriller". Sure, the main character is a doctor (pediatrician) and a good part of the action takes place in hospitals and an upscale private clinic, but there is a more contemplative tone and fewer of the artificial, sensational plot twists usually found in your standard thriller. The story seems to meander, but in a good way, and the author takes his time bringing out the doctor's back story. I especially appreciated the vivid sense of place (a south Texas border town) and the subtle rendering of some of the characters' simple humanity. Doesn't sound like I read a thriller, I know, but there are mysterious motives and manifestations, and yes, some bad dudes not too worried about anybody's humanity, so I guess it fits into the genre well enough. I just thought that the novel as a whole goes beyond the usual thriller formula, and I enjoyed the wider scope.
Thoroughly enjoyed the book. Kept interest up and never saw the twists at the end. Highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book from the shocking opening to the very end. It kept me guessing as to who the real "bad guy" was. I like the author's attention to detail. As a former English major and retired nurse, it was a delicious read.
